    Get PDF
A rigorous, mixed-integer, nonlineal programming model (MINLP) for synthesis and optimal operation of cogeneration seawater desalination plants

    Get PDF
This paper presents a rigorous mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model for optimal synthesis and design of dual-purpose seawater desalination plants. The proposed superstructure considers more alternative configurations than the model recently proposed by Mussati et al. [1] and all process equipment is modelled in a rigorous way. The MINLP model introduces binary variables in order to select equipment for the cogeneration plant. The detailed model for the MSF desalter developed by Mussati et al. [2] was considered. The MSF mathematical model involves the real-physical constraints for the evaporation process. Nonlinear equations are used to model all plant equipment rigorously in terms of chemico-physical properties (enthalpies, entropies, vapor pressure) and design equations (efficiencies, NEA, BPE, heat transfer coefficients, momentum balances, among others). The proposed model is not only useful for synthesis, but also for analyzing different design alternatives. The model has been implemented in a general algebraic modelling system [4]. Several study cases were successfully solved by applying the MINLP model. A case study is presented in order to illustrate the model's capabilities.Fil: Mussati, Sergio Fabian. Get PDF
This work presents a novel approach for solving the short-therm scheduling of hydro-thermal power generation, including pumped storage systemsand transmission constraints. The problem addressed is known as Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC). Pumped Storage Units (PSUs) are importantin electric systems during the off-peak and the peak demand periods, providing economic and technical benefits. Linear aproximations are applied to nonlinear equations of this kind of mathematical problems which are: fuel cost functions, generation-discharge curves of PSUs and transmission constraints modeled with Alternating Current power flow model. Thus, MILP models are presented for the problem addessed. To prove the efficiency of the proposed models, two systems with PSUs will be tested: a modified 6-bus and the IEEE 31-bus power system. Results show that the proposed MILP models allow: modeling the SCUC problem more realistically, obtaining feasible solutions within efficient computational times, and reaching production cost savings up to almost 20% compared to power systems that lack capacities to pumping water. Several indicators obtained from results are presented through graphs, as a tool for improving operation and maintenance of power systems. The analysis of these indicators and the graphic interpretation allow to identify and classify critical parts of systems as well as to make recommendations about future system improvements.Fil: Alvarez, Gonzalo Exequiel. Model Adaptation for Real-Time Optimization in Energy Systems

    Get PDF
Real-time optimization (RTO) is widely used in industry to operate processes close to their maximum performance. The models used for RTO need to be adapted using real-time data to ensure feasibility of the model optimal inputs and convergence to the real plant optimal point. Heat and power systems are suitable for being optimized in real-time because of their fast dynamics and the benefits achievable by reacting to changes in power prices and steam demand. This work proposes a modifier adaptation strategy that exploits the structure of certain problems to make the adaptation faster and more reliable, which is proven to be particularly useful for heat and power systems. The adaptation is performed in the equations that predict efficiencies or performance of unit operations. By identifying the variables that modify each performance factor, the number of data sets needed for gradient correction is reduced. This makes the proposed strategy suitable for real-time optimization of processes with a large number of inputs. Two alternatives are proposed to implement the approach: gradient calculation by finite differences and quadratic regression using current and past data. The features and behavior of this approach are shown through two case studies: (i) a simple model with three processes, and (ii) a heat and power system of a sugar and ethanol plant. A comparison with other existent approaches shows a better performance in terms of operating cost and sensitivity to noise.Fil: Serralunga, Fernán José. Optimal MSF plant design

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to present a rigorous model for Multi-Stage Flash Evaporation System (MSF). The MSF system is represented as a No Linear Programming (NLP) model. The model incorporates a high number of non-linear restrictions; so the achievement of the global optimum is difficult. Here, the study of an algorithm for the system optimisation is presented.Fil: Mussati, Sergio Fabian. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Processes integration: Multiplant complex vs multipurpose plant assessment

    Get PDF
This paper presents a tool for the generation and evaluation of different alternatives of product production. The importance of this approach lies in the integration of synthesis, design, operation, and scheduling decisions. When simultaneously approached, these decisions allow consideration of the relationships and effects between critical elements of the problem that are usually analyzed sequentially. Two different scenarios are modeled in order to evaluate and select which production process is convenient to develop: multipurpose plant and multiplant complex with single-product batch plants. The methodology is illustrated by an industrially motivated case study involving the production of three products: torula yeast, bakery yeast, and brandy. According to different production conditions, both scenarios are solved, and the analysis and conclusions with regards to the most favorable production scheme are reported.Fil: Corsano, Gabriela. Design and operation issues using NLP superstructure modelling

    Get PDF
Till present, models that determined batch plants configurations in the chemical process industry resorted to models with binary variables to represent the different admissible options. This approach allowed representing the problem in a simple way while considering a significant number of alternatives. Nevertheless, the non-convexity that arises when dealing with detailed models for representing the involved units operation prevents its correct resolution or has a low performance. This work presents a representation of the problem through a superstructure that takes explicitly into account all the alternatives without resorting to binary variables. By using extremely simple modeling, it is possible to manage an appropriate number of options for this type of problems by means of a non-linear programming (NLP) model. Moreover, it is possible to consider duplication in series of production stages, which is an alternative that has not been used till now. This approach is posed for the case of a fermentors network. The solution is reached with very low requirements as regards employed computer time and without the aforementioned difficulties.Fil: Corsano, Gabriela. A steady-state module for modeling anaerobic biofilm reactors

    Get PDF
A steady state model of an anaerobic methanogenic biofilm reactor-module that accounts for the biological interactions of four microbial groups, ionic equilibrium in solution, gas-liquid transfer phenomena and biofilm processes is presented. The model consists of a continuous stirred tank reactor type that allocates an inert support material, whose specific surface is taken into account. The biofilm model assumes an homogeneous biofilm of uniform thickness and constant density with no mass transfer resistance. The biofilm detachment process rate is modeled as a second-order function on the biofilm thickness and a first-order function on the mass fraction of the fixed biomass concentration of each microbial group. The balance equations for non-active biomass in liquid and biofilm are included. The model predictions have been satisfactorily compared with steady state experimental data reported in literature from a one-phase methanogenic biofilm system treating an acetic acid-based synthetic effluent, and a two-phase system with combined suspended (acidogenic) and attached (methanogenic) microbial growth treating a food industry wastewater composed by two residual process streams.Fil: Mussati, Miguel Ceferino. Optimization of a multi-generation power, desalination, refrigeration and heating system

    Get PDF
The optimization of a multi-generation system which represents the integrated dual-purpose desalination plant and a low-scale absorption refrigeration system is addressed. A nonlinear mathematical programming optimization model that integrates a natural gas combined-cycle, a multi-effect distillation desalination plant, a series flow double-effect water-lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system, and a water heater, is developed based on first-principle models. The model is implemented in General Algebraic Modelling System and a generalized gradient-based optimization algorithm is used. Given design specifications for electricity generation (around 37 MW), freshwater production (100 kg/s), refrigeration capacity (2 MW), and thermal load for heating (around 0.7 MW of hot water), the integrated system is optimized by minimizing two objective functions by single-objective optimization: total heat transfer area and total annual cost. As a result, minimum total heat transfer area values of 39148 m2, 36002 m2, and 35161 m2 are obtained when 4, 5, and 6 distillation effects were considered in the multi-effect distillation system, respectively. Also, a minimum annual cost of around 24 MM$/yr. is obtained for 5 distillation effects. The influence of the number of effects in the multi-effect distillation subsystem on the optimal solutions is analyzed. Cost-effective optimal solutions are developed for the studied multi-generation system.Fil: Pietrasanta, Ariana Milagros. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
